The advantages
Marine currents represent a very powerful energy source with many advantages over other renewable energy sources. The table below shows a comparison with other traditional and renewable energy sources. Despite the variable features, the advantages of marine currents over the other renewable sources are obvious.
Comparison of energy sources

The advantages of marine currents
- Water turbines may have much smaller diameters than wind turbines since the average energy density of marine currents is much higher than the one of good wind sites.
- Current and energy production speed are fully predictable once accurate surveys have been conducted
- It is a potentially modular technology and there is no need for costly civil engineering.
- Presumably, the environmental impact from the exploitation of the marine currents is likely to be minimal.
- There is no landscape impact.
